Are there some car rental companies in Avignon? After reading some posts here on TA I understand that the bus service is rather slow to get to some of the surrounding areas of Avignon.

A good rental site is Autoeurope. They are a broker for major rental companies like Europcar, Avis, etc. Their discount rates are often competitive. Many members here have found their service and price satisfactory.

There are rental agencies at the TGV station and possibly one at the older central rail station. I also recommend Autoeurope as mentioned above.
Depending upon how much time you are spending in the area and what your travel objectives are, have a rental car is strongly recommended. From Avignon there are good rail connections to Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Nimes, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and Orange. Bus servers virtually all other locations but many places have only one or two buses a day and are generally not conducive to tourism.
A rental car is really the option transportation method.
