cruise ship arrival and itenary

We will be arriving on August 12 on the cruise ship Summit. We want to make the most of our time in Nice and tend to shy away from organized tours. Any recommendations of what to see and how to get around?

You are already heading in the right direction - we cruise a lot, and have now spend two land-based holidays in Nice. Following a grim-faced lady/man armed with a pole in a little obedient crocodile is not our idea of fun, and we have spent many a happy hour silently sympathising with them as they whizz past all the lovely stuff heading for something utterly boring.

Depends on your taste, but IMHO Nice is a place for wandering gently, having a coffee while people-watching, gazing at the Med, and you can only do this on your own. Assuming you have most of a whole day, I would spend the morning wandering around the flower/fruit market and old town, followed by a stroll down the Promenade des Anglais, then (if you have time) a wander across Place Massena into the newer part of the town, stopping at very regular intervals for refreshment.

However, if you are into culture and not utterly idle, I%26#39;m sure someone else will come up with more exciting stuff - a few clues as to your interests would be useful - there is something for everyone in Nice, and I (almost) guarantee you will return for a land-based holiday - a cruise to Nice is was got us addicted to the Riviera.

Climb or take the elevator up to the %26quot;Château Rock,%26quot; which is where the Promenade des Anglais swings around to the old port. There are fabulous views from the rock, as well as minor Roman ruins, and it%26#39;s a very nice park popular with families.

Definitely spend some time wandering around Vieux Nice%26#39;s narrow streets, especially if Provençal fabrics interest you.

On the art side, there%26#39;s the fine Chagall museum, the Matisse Museum, the modern-art museum, and a host of other places of itnerest. We especially like the Franciscan monastery, next to the city rose garden and the park containing the Matisse Museum.

You can get around Nice by the new tram system, which costs only 1 Euro per ride; catch it at the Place Masséna. The bus system is also good.

Enjoy Nice, our favorite place in the world.

are you definitely docking in Nice?

Its common for cruises docking in Villefranche to be described in cruise brochures as docking in Nice
