Food & Drink in Nimes

Hi,

For all you past visitors to Nimes, is it possible to have an evening meal and wine on a budget?

I am sure there are expensive restaurants, but are there more affordable places too?

Any recommendations?

How much would we be looking at for a meal with wine for 2.

Many thanks,

Lisa

Hi

if you wander round the many restaurants in the medieval centre, you will find it easy to eat for two with wine for under Euro 50, and even under Euro 30.

There are kiosks and Mcdo%26#39;s around for much less !

One thing to remember if you are on a budget is to drink the loacl wine on draught - a pichet. Check the wine list as the draught wine is often shown at the back of the list.

Depending on the restaurant a half litre of wine will be between 5 to 10 Euro with a 75cc bottle costing from 15 to 20+ Euro.

There is a wide varity of fixed price menu%26#39;s in any town in France - there is a small restaurant down the road from us where we can get a superb 3 course meal for two at 30 Euro - and that includes a litre of house wine (and sometimes a free glass of Champagne if Madam is feeling generous).

If you are staying at an Hotel ask the Reception for their suggestions - they will want to suggest a good place not for their commission but because of the interest the French take in their food.

I%26#39;d like to second, very firmly, the suggestion of dining at La Table d%26#39;Auguste in rue Nationale, not far from the junction of Boulevards Gambetta and Amiral Courbet. The prices are very reasonable, the serice is impeccable, and the food is simply the best of local cuisine. Avoid the tourist infested places near the Town hall and come here - this is where French people eat and the restaurant has won numerous acclades.

boucheboy, what is the name of your local restaurant, and where is it located. I%26#39;d like to try it out.

Many thanks,

Based on the recommendations in this thread, my husband and I ate at La Table d%26#39;Auguste last week during our 3 week trip to France. It was one of the top 3 dining experiences during our trip. The food was excellent, the service was attentive and we enjoyed the fact that the restaurant was so small. We did not book but arrived shortly after the restaurant opened at 8pm.
