Santa Margherita (for Portofino) is the other side of Genoa. I have done the Nice - Genoa part and saw local trains at Genoa station which head down to the %26quot;near%26quot; Portofino and Cinque Terre stations.Happy to be corrected but as far as I know you need to get to Genoa and change.

The few International Trains that run from Nice Ville go to Genoa, Turin or Milan Central, and are designed to bring Italian tourists into Nice, (not Nice tourists to Portofino!)

The times of the few International trains rarely fit anyones schedule. I found the best way was to book a through ticket at Nice Ville station ticket office a day in advance - cut out all the Italian hassle. Take any train from Nice Ville to Ventimiglia (open ticket) and then a reserved place on a Trenitalia train from Ventimiglia to Genoa, change at Genoa and on to Santa Margherita.

\our Nice-Genoa leg was planned at about three hours but with a broken down train in an Italian tunnel, it four hours one way, and trains back were running over an hour late. (And they said Mussolini made the Itlian trains run on time. Not as you%26#39;d notice.)
