Travelling from hotel at Charles de Gaulle into Paris

What is the easiest way and cheapest for a family of 4 to travel into Paris from a hotel at charles de Gaulle airport? We are staying a few days and have a car - but would prefer not to drive into Paris but are happy to use a park and ride. The RER option from the airport appears expensive (if I have looked at the correct prices) when you count it up for a familt of 4 over three days. It also means shuttling it back and forward to the airport from the hotel.

You can perhaps reduce the commute costs by buying 5-zone passes (only two cover the CDG route: Paris Visite or Navigo Decouverte %26#39;semaine%26#39;), or you can buy %26#39;carnet%26#39; of RER tickets for zone 5 to get a small discount per ticket. Otherwise, find a hotel just off the peripherique and park your car - commute will be only zone 1-2 and much cheaper.

You have made a horrible, horrible mistake by deciding to stay at the airport. I don%26#39;t know what country you are from, but driving is not that big of a deal in France or even in Paris.

You absolutely do not want to drive in Paris, but there is nothing stopping you from getting a hotel in the city and putting the car in a long term lot.

For example, the Porte de la Chapelle Vinci car park is right at the entrance of the city on the autoroute from the airport. It charges 11€ a day for parking, and the metro is right there at the foot of the parking structure.

You would waste so much time shuttling back and forth on the RER or the bus from the airport that you would want to leave after two days.

this is a disastrous choice for a 4 night visit to Paris -- you will be eating up huge chunks of your day in Paris commuting and the airport area itself is utterly charmless and without amenities (except overpriced truly awful airport hotel dining)

there is no cheaper way into the city than the RER even if you get passes, you save only a little -- this is a cost of staying there

it is a good choice if you have ONE night in Paris and need to catch a flight, otherwise it is perhaps even a worse idea than a hotel at La Defense where at least you can take the metro in

find a hotel in Paris -- there are cheap ones on the edges where you will be able to park -- that still means long metro rides -- but cheaper ones than CDG and shorter ones for the most part

a good way to never want to return to Paris is to force your family to commute in and out every day (and with a hotel at the airport you have none of the advantages of a hotel i.e. being able to drop your stuff, change clothes, relax a bit etc)

Yes--definitely absolutely stay in Paris.

That 11€ per day to park sounds pretty good.

I would pick a hotel in the center of town with good metro/bus access. If the hotel can recommend a reasonably priced garage, I would drive all the way in-- a GPS helpful.

We like the two-star Hotel Vivienne.

A different view, making some assumptions. If nifamilytravels is from ni, with their own car, this is right-hand drive, which is not a lot of fun in heavy town traffic - the sightlines at roundabouts and junctions are all wrong, and passing other cars relies on the passenger looking out all the time. In the same situation, we%26#39;ve taken the RER from Louvres on one occasion (the park and ride didn%26#39;t feel as secure as we%26#39;d hoped though) and from Cachan in the south, when we left the car in the hotel car park. Half an hour each way on a train isn%26#39;t the end of the world - it%26#39;s actually quite relaxing at the end of a day%26#39;s sightseeing. However, I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;d plan it for more than a couple of days. If you need a compromise, you could have a couple of days focussed sightseeing in Paris, based from CDG or Disneyland or some other suggestion outside the city, then have days elsewhere for the rest of the time?
