Public transport in Carcassonne

I am thinking of spending a week at Carcassonne in September. I don%26#39;t drive abroad and was wondering if anyone knew what the buses and trains were like if we decided to venture out and about and where we could go to.

Also I would be flying to Carcassonne airport, is there an airport bus into the city.

there are 2 carcassonnes in a way - there is the old walled bit which is touristy but still nice and has loads of retaurants of varying prices\standards

and there is quite a thriving town %26#39;down below%26#39; and across the river

we usually have a car when we go away but reckonoed this was a %26#39;town break%26#39; so didnt bother

we stayed in a nice little hotel under the shadows of the walls of the old town - it was a 5 minute walk to the centre of the old town and about 15 minutes to the centre of the modern town

the airport bus stops outside the old town on the way to the new town

we had 3 full days which was about right - with a full week a car might be handy but im sure you could easily get to nearby towns by public transport

We also stayed in Carcassonne for a week, with about 3 days pottering about in the city without using the car, but then we were ready to explore a bit more. I thought the tourist information website was good http://www.carcassonne.org/ and they look to do some coach trips to less accessible destinations right into September. They also have info on bike hire. There will also be trains - the German railways website is good for timetables http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

If your French is OK you can download the local train timetables at

Toulouse is worth a day out - I am going there myself next week.

Buses in the rural area are very few and far between, mainly coming into the city in the mornings and returning in the evenings.

Thanks for the help.Do you think that Toulouse or Montpellier would be a better base for the non-driving abroad tourist.

Thinking off going at the same time iff you get a reply can you please inform me?
