Value Hotel central/Gard du Nord Area and other questions

Hi

Firstley let me apologise if this is a common question but I couldnt find an answer on looking through the recent postings.

We are looking at a short trip to Paris Aug Bank holiday if this also a public holiday in France?

We will arrive 9.pm Friday night and would like to trake the train into Paris so in an ideal world would like to stay in the Gard du nord area. Is this a good area for nightime ( saftey and bars and resteraunts etc?) if so can anyone please recommend any nice basic clean hotels 60-100 euros per night for 4 nights or any alternatives in central areas of Paris. In the past we stayed at La Defense which was little far out for night time.My ideal area to stay would be St Germaine or St Michel but fear these are out of my price bracket.

Thanks in advance

Racheal

I%26#39;ve stayed at Hôtel de Londres et d%26#39;Anvers, Bvd Magenta, 2 star around 75 euros p/night incl breakfast. Less than 5 mins walk from Gare du Nord.

I was only there overnight so didn%26#39;t explore the area so can%26#39;t comment on the safety issue. However hotel was good value.

The area around Gare du Nord is perfectly safe as long as you exercise the same cautions you would in any large city. By that I mean hold on to your handbag tightly at all times and don%26#39;t leave cameras, phones etc unattended. It%26#39;s not picture postcard Paris but with good bus and metro links you%26#39;re only about 10 minutes from the Seine.

The area around Blvd de Magenta has several hotels within your price range. Some which come to mind are, Hotel de L%26#39;Europe, Eden Magenta, Hotel Altona, and Hotel Mercure Magenta. If you do a search for %26quot;Paris hotels 10e%26quot; you will get plenty to choose from. Try Alpharooms.com and Venere.com if you don%26#39;t want to book direct with the hotel. There are bars and restaurants near Gare de l%26#39;Est which are OK, if you want something a bit better head to Place de la Republique (10 mins walk) for plenty of choice.

There are plenty of hotels in that price range around Gare du Nord, and I would venture to say that prices continue to drop as you go north.

I don%26#39;t have the slightest idea what date is the %26quot;August Bank Holiday%26quot;. August 15th is the only holiday in France in August.

But August is also one of the cheapest and easiest times to get a hotel in Paris (more so after the 15th than before that date).

Thank you all so much
