IS it possible to rent a small boat in or nearby St Tropez for a few hours or so without breaking the bank?

I presume you do not have a permis or an International Certicate of Competence. In which case you can only take out small boats like an inflatable.
This company in Cavalaire I have used for many years and they are completely reliable plus they speak English.

It would be useful if posters such as yourself made reference to the level of competence you have on boats. Your question doesn%26#39;t say whether you have the qualifications to take the helm, whether you want one with pilot ..... on the Cote d%26#39;Azur there are so many options so please be more specific.

I dont have any licences etc, but we have rented motor boats before in other locations. I dont necessarily want to have a pilot, just a reasonable boat for 2 for a few hours of pottering about.

And for sailing, there are sailing schools from the Federation Française de Voile all over the region.
Most of these offer small sailboats (no motored ones) such as Sunfish or 2-people catamarans or kayaks for rent. You need to know what you%26#39;re doing for the sailboats, but no license is required (at least, i%26#39;ve never been asked for one).
In St Tropez, the Baie des Canebiers has such a sailing club. I%26#39;ve seen their catamarans on the beach, but don%26#39;t have the details on requirements or prices. Shouldn%26#39;t break the bank for 2 hours.
