North African and Sub-Saharan African Restaurants

Off to Paris next week and would like some recommendations for (1) good North African (preferably Algerian or Tunisian) restaurants as well as (2) places that serve authentic Sub-Saharan cuisine. Merci !

Don%26#39;t know if Ethiopia qualifies but we have a favorite in Paris: GODGO 8,rue de l%26#39;Ecole Polythechnique

Paris, Métro: Maubert Mutualité in the 5th.

It%26#39;s tiny and obscure but really good.

Tons of such restaurants in the 18th arrondissement, both the Maghrebi couscous places as well as the African restaurants.

I live at metro Marx Dormoy, and I would say that there are at least 20 such places within a radius of 500 meters of the metro station.

I totally second KerouacII on that... Your best alternative for sub-saharian food is around Rue Myrrha/poissoniers at Chateau Rouge metro station... You%26#39;ll be surrounded by locals from our former colonies and both the food an dthe ambiance is great. If you can do it in the day time it%26#39;s nicer, with the material stores, the Dejean exotic market and the street frensy; the night is more urban (it%26#39;s also a hooker spot and the Crack supermarket for the whole city) but since you%26#39;re in Paris it remains safe.

For North African food, you%26#39;ll find some closer to Barbes in the same neighborhood, around rue de la Goutte d%26#39;Or; but if you are looking for excellence, some high rank restaurant well deserve a visit. The North African tradition is kept in Paris since the 20s by the Great Mosk which has a cool restaurant (and the best pastries in town) in the 5th district. Le petit Cahoua (2 addresses, rue des taillandiers around Bastille or Boulevard Saint Marcel in the 13th) are great oriental restaurant with an amazing decor. Finally, Tanja (rue de Ponthieu, by the Champs-Elysées), belonging to Cathy and David Geta was really hype at one point, yet a bit overpriced, and will give you an idea of the crowd you%26#39;ll bump into if you were to take a trip to Marrakech...

Many thanks for the great suggestions so far as to where to focus (and also what else to keep an eye out for) !

I really like Mansouria at metro Faiderbe-Chaligny.

I second the Mansouria, delicious

On rue Doudeauville, there is the %26#39;Best Africa%26#39; restaurant -- all dishes 5€. Maybe even less now that the VAT has been reduced.
