Luggage, how safe on trains (TGV, Corail)?

When the train is in motion, can I leave the luggage where I am sitting %26amp; go to the cafe-car to get a bite or to the restroom? Note, I will be travelling alone.

I never have any problem in doing so.

Depending on your luggage, you may have to store it on the shelves at the end of the train.

If you%26#39;re worried, or for piece of mind, just bring a cable tie to secure it to the shelf at the end of the train or over your seat.

While you may not have any problems otherwise, it%26#39;s best not to leave it unattended.

Over the past 20 years, I must have done over 3 or 400.000 kilometers on the train in France. So far, I have never had anything stolen. I must say I travel 90% 1st class. The yearly pass is about 800 Euros and I get 50% off every ticket in France plus some other destinations such as Frankfurt, Munich, Geneva, Lausanne...

If you have heavy luggage that can%26#39;t go over your head, have a card/sign with your name on them, have a look when the train stops and when people get off. If you really worry, you could also have them attached to the shelves.

For smaller items, you could have them with you, under your seat or over your head. Don%26#39;t show anyone that you have valuable items, don%26#39;t show your camera, don%26#39;t show your money, don%26#39;t show your mobile phone... Just try to be clever in what you do and what you show.

When going to restroom or cafe-car, have a look at people beside or behind you and if you feel unsafe, simply ask one of them to check. French people are nice and will be happy to assist. When leaving, you should always have with you your passport/money/train ticket. Don%26#39;t stay in the cafe-car too long. I%26#39;m saying that because there are people who spend 80% of their journey time in the cafe-car.

I must also say that I always say hello to the person next to me and always try to help if I can. It helps...

Food and drinks in the cafe-car are poor and expensive. You should probably look for sandwich and/or soft drinks on your way to the station. Sandwiches at the station are also poor most of the time, except when there is a Paul Bakery at the station (Gare du Nord in the RER section, Gare Montparnasse).

Bon voyage !

Unless you are traveling with just a small overnight bag, you will have to leave your luggage in the racks at the entrance to your train car. We have been traveling by train in France since 2000, and we have never had a problem. We do have the habit of getting up early to pick up our luggage just before we arrive at our station. If you are the last to pick up your luggage, it would be possible that someone could have taken your bag, on purpose or even by mistake.

Valuables should remain with you, but luggage is not at all a problem. Since the TGV is hermetically sealed like an airplane, it is a situation that makes potential thieves completely uncomfortable with no place to run %26quot;if necessary%26quot;.
