We just completed an 8 day stay in Paris. It was our first trip. We used a book called Rick Steves%26#39; Paris 2009. The book was terrific and allowed us to see Paris like locals. It had accurate descriptions and good suggestions on every aspect of our trip. All the restaurants were top notch and exactly as described. The walking tours were great too. Its a no nonsense guide with great insight. We saw many other people with it in there back pockets.

But do you really need a 400+ page guide book?

The book fit in my pocket and if I knew the 40 questions I wanted answered I would of only needed those pages. It was always there when I needed the answer and it worked for me.
