Hotel De France Monpazier

Recently we visited Monpazier and sat outside in the square outside the Hotel De France for lunch. We loked at the menu and when the waiter came to the table we ordered omlettes for two of our party. We were immediately told that omlettes were off in an abrupt and rude manner. We immediately left and found another restaurant down a side street and had a superb meal there. It was full of locals but the proprieter made room for us and the omlette was superb.

Needless to say we will not be going near the Hotel De France again.

Hi,

Just a word of advice. We felt that this Hotel was expensive to have lunch at when we visited Monpazier back in May earlier this year, 2009.

The hotel restaurant was very busy with many patrons having lunch. We thought that this is obviously a popular place to eat and therefore happily sat down to regard the menu. The restaurant had a nice ambiance. As it was not a particularly nice day outside we were happy to sit inside and eat.

We were a family of four adults.

The plat de jour was around 15 euros which was not cheap (usually between 8-12) but about right for that particular village. But we decided that we did not like the particular meal that was being offered that day.

So, we ordered a cheese and mushroom omelette each with fries and it came with a small salad garnish. On the menu it said the price was 12 euros. We thought that was higher than the usual 8-10 euros normally charged for an omelette but as it was a small hotel we accepted that it might be a higher price than it would be normally. We also odered a picher of rose and we were given the usual bread alongside.

The food was adequate. Small plate, not a large omelette by any means, but as it was just for lunch we were happy enough. But, when we asked for the bill it came to around 80 euros. Each meal was 16 euros each because they charged an additional 4 euros each for the small frites on the plate. They did not mention this when we ordered.

We would not have paid 12 euros each for a small omelette and a handful of garnish only. We expected the frites to be included at that price.

So, we felt that an overall amount of 20 euros each was too much to pay for a small omelette, frites and some house wine. We felt that we had been overcharged but obviously paid and left.

Difficult for families on holiday trying to budget the week if they are caught out like that. They may still have to eat out in the evening!

The staff were nice.

When we studied the people around us eating they had mainly ordered the plat de jour, so that probably explained the popularity.

Bergerac resident.
